Location: 853
Conner Street
Date Built: 1899
History of the Building:
This was
the site of the J. Joseph & Company clothing business for many
decades. Louis and his brother Julius took over their father’s
clothing business and located here in 1883. After his brother
departed to New York, Louis erected this new building in 1899,
showing no compunction about displaying the family name prominently.
The stone façade
features Neo-Classical references. The balustrade at the parapet and
the round windows in the frieze suggest just a touch of the Beaux
Arts Classicism. The wide arched window, however, is a step toward
the twentieth century. In all, the style serves to make a rather
small and narrow building into an impressive structure on the
street.
