Location: 864-876
Logan Street
Date Built: 1889
History of the Building:
This
exceptional Queen Anne building was built by Daniel Craycraft in
1889. Its galvanized cast-iron facade bears the maker's shield of
Hetherington & Berner of Indianapolis. The exuberance of
detailing and ornamentation as well as the loggia-or second story
balcony-is quite unusual for a commercial structure. The small panes
that outline the upper window sashes of the second-floor windows are
typically found on Queen Anne style residential buildings.
The building's tenants have
included banks for at least twenty years, pharmacists, and drug
stores. Meade Vestal, a prominent Democrat, attorney, and circuit
court judge had his office in the second floor space from 1890 to 1954.
